Terms:

Herb: Any plant used for making medicine, seasoning or scents.

Infusion: A tea made by pouring boiling water over the plant or parts of the plant. The most common method of preparing an infusion is to place herbs in a heat tolerant container that has a lid, and pour boiling water over the herbs ( a normal rule of thumb is to use a cup of green herbs per cup of boiling water applied, or a handful of dry herbs per cup of boiling water applied ). Cover the container and allow the herbs to steep in covered container for about 15 minutes. Your infusion is now ready to enjoy!

Decoction: A drink made by boiling the plant or parts of the plant in water and then straining. As a rule of thumb, place the herbs in water that has been brought to a boil, then reduce heat until the water is gently simmering. Simmer for about 15 minutes, then strain. The liquid is the decoction. Honey or an aromatic herb is usually added to improve the taste.

Aromatic. This refers to herbs that have a pleasant smell or taste. They are often used for potpourri or for adding to other herbs to improve the taste of a decoction. One part aromatic to three parts medicinal herb is usually sufficient.

Demulcent: An herb that possesses soothing, mucilaginous qualities which help to relieve any internal irritation such as arrowroot, coltsfoot, comfrey, sassafras pith, and slippery elm.

Liniment: A liniment is a topical solution applied to the skin. How to make a liniment: You will need a clean glass jar with lid, a pint size canning jar works fine, a cup of chopped fresh herbs from your garden or ¼ cup of dried herbs ( we recommend our tincture packs ) 1/2 pint of grain alcohol ( such as Everclear ) and 1/2 pint of distilled water.
Place the herb material into the jar and fill jar with equal parts grain alcohol and distilled water. Close lid tightly and label the jar with the ingredients and the date.
Store the jar in a dark, dry and cool place. Every 2 days, shake the jar vigorously.
After four to six weeks, strain the mixture through a screen or colander, catching the liquid in bowl, then take the herbs and wrap in a towel or pillowcase and squeeze as much liquid as possible from herbs, catching this liquid in the bowl as well.
The Strained liquid is your finished liniment. We recommend storing liniments in four ounce amber glass bottles. Be sure to label bottles correctly!

Herbal Lozenges: Herbal lozenges are a wonderful way to soothe a sore throat or relieve cold and flu conditions.
How to make Herbal Lozenges: You will need about 4 ounces of your favorite herbal decoction, we recommend Blue Vervain, Echinacea or Sage.
Pour decoction into a bowl and add powdered Marsh Mallow root until you have a thick, paste like solution. Add 3-4 drops of peppermint essential oil to mix.
Make small lozenges by pinching small amounts of the mix between your fingers and shaping to size. Place lozenges on wax paper and allow to dry for a few hours, then store in covered container in refrigerator.
Lozenges should keep in the fridge for several weeks.
Suck on a lozenge whenever you have a sore throat.

Tincture: A preparation made by soaking an herb in alcohol until the alcohol absorbs the beneficial ingredients of the plant. This process is known as maceration.
How to make a tincture: You will need a clean glass jar with lid, a pint size canning jar works fine, a cup of chopped fresh herbs from your garden or ¼ cup of dried herbs ( we recommend our tincture packs ) and 1 pint of vodka. The vodka is usually about 80-85 proof, do not use 100 proof vodka.
Place the herb material into the jar and fill jar with vodka. Close lid tightly and label the jar with the ingredients and the date.
Store the jar in a dark, dry and cool place. Every 2 days, shake the jar vigorously.
After four to six weeks, strain the mixture through a screen or colander, catching the liquid in bowl, then take the herbs and wrap in a towel or pillowcase and squeeze as much liquid as possible from herbs, catching this liquid in the bowl as well.
The Strained liquid is your finished tincture. We recommend storing tinctures in four ounce amber glass bottles, and keeping smaller one ounce amber glass bottles with droppers in your medicine cabinet, re-filling the smaller bottles as needed. Be sure to label bottles correctly!

Tinctures made from at least 25% alcohol ( 80 proof vodka is 40% ) can be stored indefinitely, tinctures you do not use can be passed on to your children and grandchildren.

Compresses and Poultices: A compress is basically a cloth soaked in herbal decoction or infusion that is applied to painful areas. Use Comfrey for sports type injuries, Plantain for insect bits and bee stings, St. John's Wort and Rosemary for pain relief and Chamomile for cramp relief. A poultice is made by placing a cup of the chosen herb in a heat tolerant bowl, pouring boiling water over the herbs and allowing to steep until the herbs have cooled enough to be tolerated by the skin.
Place a clean cotton cloth over the infected area, then place the warm/semi hot herbs on top of the cloth and cover with another piece of cotton cloth. Keep the poultice in place until the herbs have cooled down completely. Discard the herbs and wash the poultice cloths before reusing. Best results are obtained when poultices are applied 3 times a day.

Suppositories and Boluses
You can make a natural suppository using powdered herbs and cocoa butter. To make a suppository should warm cocoa butter to a liquid state in a double boiler and stir in the powdered herbs as it cools. When it is mixed well put into the refrigerator to harden. Roll this out to be about 3/4 of an inch thick. Cut into 3/4 of an inch strips. These are used in the rectum and the vagina to treat infections and irritations. They can also be used for tumors in these areas.
Generally the herbs used in suppositories are astringents such as white oak bark or bayberry bark; and demulcent healing herbs like comfrey root or slippery elm; and antibiotic herbs like garlic and Goldenseal. Goldenseal is really a great one for this as it combines astringent, tissue healing, and antibiotic qualities all in one.
Do not use more than 6 suppositories in a day, or for more than a week at a time. If condition has not cleared up in this time, you should consult your physician.

Agrimonia odorata
The plant is found abundantly throughout England, on hedge-banks and the sides of fields, in dry thickets and on all waste places. In Scotland it is much more local and does not penetrate very far northward. Agrimony has an old reputation as a popular, domestic medicinal herb, being a simple well known to all country-folk. It belongs to the Rose order of plants, and its slender spikes of yellow flowers, which are in bloom from June to early September, and the singularly beautiful form of its much-cut-into leaves, make it one of the most graceful of our smaller herbs.
A fast growing perennial to 3-5 feet tall with yellow flowers on long slender spikes. Grows in zones 3-8. Taken as a tea, it is useful for liver, kidney and bladder problems. It is also a healing herb for mucous membranes and it's astringent properties help stop bleeding. The plant also produces a yellow/gold dye.

Although angelica is common in meadows and pastures throughout the country, the only one with medicinal values is archangelica. It is very hard to tell this plant apart from its cousin, so be careful where you acquire your source. It is a beautiful garden plant with purple-green leaves and white and pink flowers. Grows in zones 4-9. An infusion can be made by pouring a pint of water over an ounce of the bruised root. In folk medicine, it is said to create an aversion to alcohol. It also relieves flatulence. 3110 Broom Tops ( Cytisus scoparius )
A large bushy shrub, deciduous, leaves silky when young. Flowers are longer than the leaves, large, brilliant yellow or bright lemon color. Hardy for zones 5-10. Makes beanlike pods that when mature, can split noisily, sending seed several feet from the plant. Can be grown to 7,000 feet elevation. A maintenance free garden and lawn plant. The young shoots of this shrub have been used in medicine, though not in much repute at the present time. They are largely stimulant, and moderately relaxant, acting somewhat slowly but decidedly. Their chief influence is expended upon the kidneys, from which they secure the elimination of a very large amount of watery materials. They have been used in dropsy; but will readily overwork the kidneys. (See Diuretics. ) Large doses will prove emetic, and sometimes cathartic. Half an ounce of the dried tops boiled in ten ounces of water for a few minutes, and strained, forms the usual decoction; and of this from one to two fluid ounces may be given three times a day. Needs hot weather to set fruit, best grown in higher zones. The vine is perennial, herbaceous, fast-growing, heavy, requiring a strong trellis; climbing trees to 50 ft (15 m) or more by means of 4-parted tendrils equipped with adhesive discs that can adhere tightly to the smoothest surface. Young stems are hairy. The leaves are gray-hairy, rounded-cordate or rounded kidney-shaped, to 1 ft wide, deeply indented at the base, 3-lobed, with wavy or toothed margins, on petioles 1 1/2 to 4 3/4 in (4-12 cm) long. Flowers are white or yellow, urn-shaped, 5-lobed, solitary, the male 3/4 in (2 cm) long, the female about 2 in (5 cm) long. Renowned for its strong, sweet, agreeable, melon-like odor, the striking fruit is ellipsoid or nearly cylindrical, sometimes slightly curved; 12 to 24 in (30-60 cm) in length, 2 3/4 to 4 1/2 in (7-11.25 cm) thick, hard-shelled, orange-red, maroon, dark-purple with tinges of violet, or entirely jet-black; smooth and glossy when ripe, with firm, orange-yellow or yellow, cantaloupe-like, tough, juicy flesh, 3/4 in (2 cm) thick. In the central cavity, there is softer pulp, a soft, fleshy core, and numerous flat, oval seeds, 5/8 in (16 mm) long and 1/4 in (6 mm) wide, light-brown bordered with a dark-brown stripe, in tightly-packed rows extending the entire length of the fruit.
The cassabanana is believed native to Brazil but it has been spread throughout tropical America. Historians have evidence that it was cultivated in Ecuador in pre-Hispanic times. It was first mentioned by European writers in 1658 as cultivated and popular in Peru. It is grown near sea-level in Central America but the fruit is carried to markets even up in the highlands. Venezuelans and Brazilians are partial to the vine as an ornamental, but in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico it is grown for the usefulness of the fruit.

In 1903, O.F. Cook saw one fruit in a market in Washington, D.C. The United States Department of Agriculture received seeds from C.A. Miller, the American Consul in Tampico, Mexico, in 1913 (S.P.I. #35136). H.M. Curran collected seeds in Brazil in 1915 (S.P.I. #41665). Wilson Popenoe introduced seeds from Guatemala in 1916 (S.P.I. #43427). The author brought seeds from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, to the Agricultural Research and Education Center, Homestead, in 1951. A resulting vine grew to large size but produced a single 2 ft (60 cm) fruit. Dr. John Thieret, formerly Professor of Botany at Southwestern Louisiana University, says that the Cajuns in the southern part of that state grow the cassabanana for making preserves. Verrill stated in 1937, "The fruit is now on sale in New York markets."
Fenzi says that the cassabanana is grown from seeds or cuttings. A high temperature during the fruiting season is needed to assure perfect ripening. Brazilians train the vine to grow over arbors or they may plant it close to a tree. However, if it is allowed to climb too high up the tree there is the risk that it may smother and kill it. The cassabanana remains in good condition for several months if kept dry and out of the sun.
The fruit has high market value in Puerto Rico. It is cut up and sold by the piece, the price being determined by weight.
The ripe flesh, sliced thin, is eaten raw, especially in the summer when it is appreciated as cooling and refreshing. However, it is mainly used in the kitchen for making jam or other preserves. The immature fruit is cooked as a vegetable or in soup and stews.
People like to keep the fruit around the house, and especially in linen- and clothes-closets, because of its long-lasting fragrance, and they believe that it repels moths. It is also placed on church altars during Holy Week.
Medicinal Uses: In Puerto Rico, the flesh is cut up and steeped in water, with added sugar, overnight at room temperature so that it will ferment slightly. The resultant liquor is sipped frequently and strips of the flesh are eaten, too, to relieve sore throat. It is believed beneficial also to, at the same time, wear a necklace of the seeds around the neck.
The seed infusion is taken in Brazil as a febrifuge, vermifuge, purgative and emmenagogue. The leaves are employed in treating uterine hemorrhages and venereal diseases. In Yucatan, a decoction of leaves and flowers (2 g in 180cc water) is prescribed as a laxative, emmenagogue and vermifuge, with a warning not to make a stronger preparation inasmuch as the seeds and flowers yield a certain amount of hydrocyanic acid.

Aralia spinosa
Also know as Prickly elder, Angelica tree, Hercules' club, Toothache bush or tree.
The Aralia spinosa is a small tree, growing to about 30 feet. Best suited for zones 4-9. The leaves are very large and long, often 3 to 6 feet in length, prickly, bipinnate, and borne on long, prickly petioles. The flowers are white, and disposed in numerous umbels, forming a very large panicle. The involucres are small and few-leaved. The fruit consists of blackish, juicy berries.
The aralia spinosa inhabits the United States in various parts, from Pennsylvania to Louisiana, and westward to Missouri, growing in damp and rich woods and fields. The thin, ash-colored bark is the part used, although other parts of the plant possess medicinal properties; it has a peculiar, somewhat fragrant odor, and a slightly bitter, biting taste; alcohol or water extracts its properties. It is frequently grown in the Northern States for ornamentation. It blooms in August and September.
Medicinal Uses ( as listed in A Modern Herbal by Mrs. M. Grieve )
Fresh bark causes/vomiting and purging, but dried is a stimulating alterative. A tincture made from the bark is used for rheumatism, skin diseases and syphilis. The berries in tincture form, lull pain in decayed teeth and in other parts of the body, violent colic and rheumatism, useful in cholera when a cathartic is required in the following compound: 1 drachm compound powdered Jalap, 1 drachm Aralia spinosa, 2 drachms compound rhubarb powder or infused in 1/2, pint boiling water and when cold taken in tablespoonful doses every half-hour. This does not produce choleric discharges. Also a powerful sialogogue and valuable in diseases where mouth and throat get dry, and for sore throat; will relieve difficult breathing and produce moisture if given in very small doses of the powder. The bark, root, and berries can all be utilized.

A perennial plant for zones 3-10, found growing wild all over the world. Grows from 2-7 ft. tall. The bristly hairs of the plant act as a hypodermic, injecting an irritant substance under the skin when touched. A decoction of the root makes an external treatment that when applied to the scalp is said to treat baldness. A decoction of the plant is good for diarrhea.
